Change the Name of Jefferson Davis Hwy. (Northern Virginia)

Jefferson Finis Davis (June 3, 1808 – December 6, 1889) was an American politician who served as the President of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865. Before American Civil War, he operated a large cotton plantation in Mississippi and owned as many as 74 slaves. Although he argued against secession in 1858, he believed states had an unquestionable right to leave the Union. After Davis was captured in 1865, he was accused of treason and imprisoned at Fort Monroe. He was never tried and was released after two years.

I don't know about you, but I'm tired of living off of a major thoroughfare named after a slave owner and a traitor. Especially in an area that honors diversity. Most people refer to this highway as "Route One" or "The Highway", but the signs still read "Jefferson Davis Highway". This name stretches all the way from northern Virginia all the way to North Carolina. It's time to change that. It has been under discussion by local politicians, but in light of recent events I feel that it needs to be addressed and changed immediately. Lawmakers were trying to introduce a bill, but say it will be a "hard sell". There has already been an online petition, but obviously the politicians opposed need to hear it again. Please sign this petition to show your support. We will no longer stand for honoring persons of history who oppressed an entire country, owned slaves, and committed treason. This is a new world- one that honors diversity, love, and equality. Once this petition is complete I plan to show local politicians how many people support a name change.
