A group of eight Texas teenagers, seven minors and an eighteen year old named Cassius Mankin, allegedly broke into a couple's home and stole their pet emu. They are accused of taking the pet to a party, where they brutally tortured it before strangling it to death.
When phoned about the incident, the Comanche County District Attorney said the case is "pending."
Emus are gentle, intelligent and family-oriented birds. A beloved and harmless pet suffered a horrible death for no reason, and the bird's owners suffered the loss of their companion.
All the teenagers involved in this incident need to learn a hard lesson. They had no right to torture an animal and take its life, and no right to break into someone's home and steal a member of their family. If they aren't punished for their crimes to the fullest extent of the law, they may go on to hurt other animals and people.
