Elect the President by popular vote. Nominate candidates by popular vote.

The current system for nominating and electing the US President assumes that electing the president is too important to leave to a vote of the people. It dates back to a time when only land-owners were allowed to vote in most states. It is time for the nation change to direct election of the president (elimination of the Electoral College) and direct election of party nominees (delegates allocated by popular vote in each state instead of super-delegates and winner-take-all states). All of the political parties should include this in their 2016 platform.

The US has changed over the past 225 years. Most citizens are literate and educated people who have learned how to make decisions. As a society we believe in one citizen one vote and do not defer to the propertied class. The political parties must do what they can to regain the trust of the US citizenry and that means elimination of practices based on cronyism and other unethical behavior by our political leaders.

US citizens are smart enough to know that only those eligible to vote should be eligible to participate in the electoral process, including making political contributions. US citizens are smart enough to object to absentee voting (vote matching) and filibusters that are not speeches related to the bill. The US citizenry is depressed by the lack of productive work in the congress and senate.

Politicians will know that they have regained the trust of the American People when voter turnout increases dramatically and voters once again consider voting a privilege.
