Rabbits / Hares are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, this species needs protection being part of food chain instead of slaughtering for fur and meat, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) introduced draft rules to include Rabbit meat as safe food for human consumption, hence we strongly opposed the Draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulation 2016 related to inclusion of rabbit family, i.e. Leporidae under species of animal in section 2.5.1(a) of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulation, 2011.
