ENP: Everglades National Park, or Electric National Park?

  • by: Grant Campbell

Generic powerlines

Is this the way a National Park should look? FPL thinks so. They want to put massive 15 story tall transmission lines through Everglades National Park and spoil the intrinsic beauty that has been there since the Everglades was formed eons ago.

Nothing must stand in the way of making a few more dollars, even though it means something as base as spoiling a National Park, when the long term effects of exposure to high-voltage electrical fields on humans and wildlife are unknown.

Please sign this petition to let FPL and the National Park Service know that we don’t want our parks commercialized.

Dear Sirs:

The undersigned individuals ask that there be no erection of high-voltage power transmission lines in or near the Rverglades National Park.

Many species of flora and fauna exist in the park, some endangered or threatened, that would be exposed to the long term effects of high-voltage transmission lines which have been linked to multiple chronic diseases and weaknesses in humans and in wildlife.

The area is in close proximity to the Atlantic Migratory Flyway and collisions with power lines claim the lives of millions of birds annually. The Everglades National Park is a huge economic generator for the State of Florida and the communities that surround the park. The intrinsic beauty of an area visited by millions of people annually from around the world would be negatively affected, reducing the value significantly.

Please consider the impact on the next generations. The World is not ours to use and abuse, although we treat it as if it were. The natural landscape and the wildlife are what made Florida so attractive to the people who have relocated here is disappearing and we must leave something for our future generations.

Please review the enclosed petition and opt for an alternative solution to transmission lines in the park.

Thank you for your consideration,
