Animal rights groups in Australia have denounced a call for a shark cull, saying it is ‘morally wrong’, according to a report in The Guardian.
The push for a cull comes after a spike in shark sightings and attacks across the beaches of Northern NSW. As a result, many people have kept out of the water and tourists are reportedly staying away from the region.
Some surfers are now calling for a partial shark cull. However, community group No NSW Shark Cull says it’s “unacceptable to cull animals that are threatened with extinction”.
“We do not have to choose between public safety and protecting marine life; we can easily do both,” the animal rights group said in a statement.
Western Australia has abandoned its controversial shark cull after a recommendation made by the Western Australian Environment Protection Authority.
There are other methods to lessen the threat for people who want to go in the ocean. Drones, along with aircraft and boat patrols can all be used instead.
Sharks do not deserve to be culled - the ocean is their environment. Will you join me in urging Premier Mike Baird not to introduce a shark cull?
