Urge Indonesian Forestry Minister to improve or close Surabaya Zoo and other Zoos

I have learned from a member of PETA that in 2012, the Ministry of Forestry demanded a change in the Surabaya Zoo's management, but there have been little or no improvements in the welfare of animals there. "The zoo's condition is an eyesore," said Mr. Darori, director general of forest protection and nature conservation. Please write to Ministry of Forestry officials and demand that the suffering of animals at the hands of Surabaya Zoo and other zoos be ended for good. Please ask them to close the zoo and transfer the animals to more suitable enclosures.

Please send polite comments on the following email address to:

The Honorable Zulkifli Hasan

Minister, Ministry of Forestry

Please also take a moment to write to the ambassador of Indonesia to your country (http://www.embassyworld.com/embassy/Indonesia/Indonesia1.html) and ask that they do everything possible to intervene on behalf of the animals at Surabaya Zoo and all animals. We are asking people who contact us about this issue to contact the embassy, because public pressure often is the main impetus for change—the laws must be significantly strengthened and not ignored. After CNN did a piece about the atrocities occurring in Chinese zoos and theme parks, for example, the Chinese ambassador to the U.S. received thousands of letters, and authorities agreed to address some of these issues.

Together we can change things for these animals and others in Indonesia. Thank you for your attention and action.
