CONYGAR IS GOING TOO FAR

b. If you don't want three storey blocks of apartments built on Goodwick Seashore.
c. If you don't want an empty marina filling Goodwick beach.

e. If you would like to maintain the right to go cockling on Goodwick sands as is your right since the year 1215 under the famous Citizens Rights Magna Carta, and if you would like the present walks and childrens playground on the seafront to remain available to the Public in the future.

The proposed Marina for Fishguard Bay is - as every local resident knows - the original idea of Mr David Jones (Anglesey Boat Company) who submitted his application to Pembrokeshire County Council (PCC) in May 2003, now almost 12 years ago. Then, some years later, the Conygar Company entered the arena with Mr. Jones.

Conygar is an Investment company. It buys land to build on; buys existing property to develop, with the sole aim of financial gain. Conygar is in business to make money - nothing else and I have nothing against this policy.

New plans for a 450 berth Marina were drawn up and presented to PCC, but now, Conygar has included 253 apartments, with the intention to build them on our lovely seafront.

No boat owner who brings his boat to this marina will want to buy one of these apartments: he/she will live – as is customary - on their boat! So what happens to the apartments??? The usual solution is to bring future tenants in from deprived areas in the big cities – those without employment.

In the exact words of Conygar, "The proposed development presents an excellent opportunity to improve and enhance Goodwick/Fishguard's status as a national and international tourist destination and create a setting that responds to the Goodwick Conservation Area and its listed buildings". It continues, "The proposed development would enhance the overall appeal of Goowick/Fishguard as a popular tourist attraction and provide improvements to an existing well-known destination".

Sounds lovely doesn't it? It is not surprising that many on our Town Council and a few on the County Council are in favour of it.

Conygar clearly recognizes that tourism is of paramount importance to this area, and at the same time seems content to destroy our greatest asset and attraction to the tourist…our foreshore and the unbeatable views from there. It is the precise location where, in 1797 the last invaders of Great Britain were assembled before the Peace Treaty was signed. How dare Conygar desecrate this land?

The thought of erecting any apartments on Goodwick seafront is beyond comprehension, but the idea of building 253 of them described as “affordable housing” - is insane. While quite a few local residents still have a positive view of a Marina being developed in Fishguard Bay, no one is in favour of apartments being built on our seashore.

If this number of apartments are really needed by the residents of Fishguard and/or Goodwick, by all means let's have them built, but for Heaven's sake - the last place to build them should be on the seafront. There are plenty of alternative sites – some already identified.

We MUST ensure that our foreshore is protected from those wishing to make a fast buck on the back of one of our most precious assets.

Pembrokeshire County Council should wake up to the long-term impact this will inevitably have on Tourism and face up to the consequences if they dare approve Conygar’s plans.
