Stop Sellafield's Deer Cull!

The Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant is planning to shoot and kill a group of wild roe deer that are trapped between two new security fences on their site. When putting up the fences, they failed to notice the presence of any deer, and now plan to cull them over 15 sessions between February and April.

The decision to cull the deer came after the Deer Incentive Partnership (DIP) advised them that deer are difficult to round up because they tend to run and hide when spooked, and would try to hide in the thicket, causing themselves injury. The DIP claims that culling is the most humane course of action.

The DIP's advice is poorly thought out. Deer may run and hide from attempts to round them up and relocate them, but they also run and hide from gunshots. Sellafield was at fault for installing their fences without checking the area for wildlife first, and the deer deserve a chance to be relocated rather than shot and killed over 15 terrifying days. Please sign the petition to convince the Sellafield Company to stop their deer cull!

We, the undersigned, are concerned with your plans to shoot and kill a group of wild roe deer that are trapped between two new security fences on your site.

We understand that the decision to cull the deer came after the Deer Incentive Partnership (DIP) advised you that deer are difficult to round up because they tend to run and hide when spooked, and would try to hide in the thicket, causing themselves injury.

Deer may run and hide from attempts to round them up and relocate them, but they also run and hide from gunshots. We believe that the deer deserve a chance to be relocated rather than shot and killed over 15 terrifying days. We respectfully urge you to cease your deer cull plans and seek advice from animal welfare experts to find humane ways to remove the deer. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
