URGENT - Stop the building of an incinerator and a power station in our village

  • by: Eirlys Goode
  • recipient: South Holland District Concil, Spalding, Lincolnshire
Our local authority has illegally passed to have a gasifier/incinerator built on wetland, and a new power station built on agricultural land on the approach to Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire. We are a small village on the A17, the only route which means crossing a swing bridge across the river Nene. Anyone who has travelled this route will know that if the bridge is swung there is a forty five minute wait from start to finish until the ships travelling the river Nene have gone through. They will also know the wetland on their left hand side as they approach the bridge and the residential properties immediately behind that bit of land, a home to much wildlife. Behing the residential properties is the current power station, due to close and be replaced by a larger monstrosity approaching our village and the food preparation industrial area behind this.
The incinerator is due to be sited on that wetland fronting the A17 but villagers are opposed to it having held two polls both say 'NO' to the incinerator and 'Yes' to having the matter sent to the High Court for a ruling that the local authority have illegally allowed the building of this gasiifier. This link expresses exactly the fears of the residents http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/502641/Wood-dust-cancer-fears-for-residents not to mention that wood is re-usable for burning in wood burning fires, for use in crafting, building pet houses and wildlife homes, to mention just a few.
If anyone has ever been caught up in the miles of back up of traffic caused when the bridge is swung, particularly if you are alongside this piece of land, imagine the larger amount of traffic from both directions transporting this wood to the incinerator and the toxic waste they will be breathing in whilst parked there.
If only a few of you who have ever travelled this route are prepared to sign this petition to back us up, we will be eternally grateful. We do not want either of these new projects nor do we want the approach to our village spoilt more than it already is nor the health risks that go with building the incinerator and power station. Please help us to tell the local authority and Peterborough Renewable Energy Lts (the instigators of the incinerator) that we do not want our village to become a dumping ground for Lincolnshire, which is what is happening more and more. The local authority keep moving he goalposts for the planning committee dates, but we will not be put off. We do not want either of these toxic producing monstrosities in our village. Please help us.
Update #19 years ago
On 27th August when the planning committee at South Holland District Council last met and the matter of the incinerator and power station was to be discussed representatives of our objection committee attended to put forward our argument and provide proof that a local poll voted against having them dumped on us, but were refused permission to speak. The power station plans have been passed without informing us but have yet to be approved by the Department of the Environment.
