Ban Shark Fins in New York State

Shark fin soup is considered a delicacy in Chinese cuisine, but there is nothing delicate about the way fishermen get the fins off the sharks. Fishermen catch the animal and drag it aboard the boat, hack off its fin muscles, then throw it back into the sea, unable to swim and certain to die. Over 70 million sharks every year drown, bleed to death, or are eaten alive by predators after this mutilation.

The New York State legislature is considering a bill (like those already passed by the California, Oregon, Washington State, Hawaii, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands) that would ban shark fins to prevent the extreme cruelty and population depletion that are unavoidable ingredients of the soup. On the East Coast, New York has the biggest market for shark fins.

Please call on New York State's legislative leaders to pass the bill and take New York out of the cruel shark fin trade by signing the petition

Dear Assembly Environmental Chair Bob Sweeney, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, and Senator Dean Skelos:

Please support A.7707a/S.6431, a bill to ban shark fins in New York State. Shark finning is a cruel practice that leads to the violent deaths of over 70 million sharks every year and the decimation of their populations.

Fishermen catch sharks, drag them aboard, hack off their fin muscles, then throw them back into the sea, unable to swim and certain to die. Over 70 million sharks every year drown, bleed to death, or are eaten alive by predators after this mutilation.

New York is the biggest East Coast market for shark fins. The entire West Coast has already banned shark fins, as have Hawaii, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Let's join them in washing our hands of the blood of mutilated sharks.
