Sugar City...Our City! How and Why Growth Matters.

I think we can all agree that the right kind of growth matters in Sugar City. Growth benefits everyone when it is done right. How that growth happens is up to us! It's important! Here is why...

Growth Happens
Nobody is going to argue that growth in Sugar City is inevitable. BYU-Idaho is growing, and many other parts of the economy are growing too. The only question is whether Sugar City residents will direct the growth, or companies like WalMart will direct the growth through de-annexation of Sugar City and annexation into Rexburg. WalMart built on property that was in the Sugar City impact area. It was annexed into Rexburg, and Sugar City lost all income from the taxes. The city wasn’t able to benefit from that development. Growth happens through development of business, industry and residential property. These all result in additional income to the city through tax revenue. If Sugar City wants to maintain its autonomy and not loose future growth to Rexburg, we need to start preparing for future growth now. Both Chubbuck and Ammon are great examples of cities that benefited from growth by choosing to stand up and embrace the growth in their own way. The were able to maintain their own unique identity without being swallowed up by neighboring cities.

Revenue Matters
Our city needs revenue from businesses and the people who visit them. Without a healthy city economy, we don’t have the funds to maintain and improve our streets, schools, and parks. The only other alternative is higher taxes and no one wants to pay more taxes. A balanced mix of high and low density housing combined with some commercial property in Sugar City will increases the number of people contributing to the needs of the city as a whole. That helps keeps taxes down, benefiting everyone, while increasing services to a broad range of people.

Affordable Housing Matters
Healthy cities have a broad range of residents. The right kind of development in Sugar City will provide housing opportunities for seniors, growing families, and young couples. Building multi-unit complexes, four-plex housing, small starter homes, and larger family homes encourages people to put down roots in Sugar and remain a part of the community throughout their lives.

BYU-Idaho
Our proximity to BYU-Idaho provides a wonderful opportunity to develop housing for newly married couples, young families, and established families who work and contribute to the economy and community. Supporting this effort will allow our community to get behind the mission of BYU-Idaho.

Opportunities For Our Children and Citizens
By utilizing our existing vacant land we can provide space for neighborhoods and business. This will create opportunities for employment and housing in Sugar City. This is not an option now due to the lack of jobs and lack of housing opportunities.
