Texas: Don't Teach Our Children Alternative Facts

  • by: Andrew M

Texas is considering an "academic freedom" bill that could allow teachers to teach creationism as well as alternative theories when "controversial" topics such as climate change and evolution arise in class. This is unacceptable. The role of educators is not to pick and choose what facts they like best but rather to prepare young minds for the challenges ahead especially in the field of science.

According to the 2015 PISA, a test that tests the math, science and reading skills of 15-year-olds in about 70 nations, the US ranks smack in the middle when it comes to science. In today's global science-based economy average just wont cut it and we can't afford to give our educators the right to teach theories that aren't backed by real evidence. To do so would be to do a disservice to America's youth and put our economy at risk.

Not all issues are subjective. Maths and sciences for example are exact, and we should not allow religion to invade the classroom to teach our youth "alternative facts". The US is already sliding in the ranking of nations for its level of education and this bill, if it passes will definitely be used to set a precedent for other states, jeopardizing our ranking even more.

Join me and let's tell State Rep. Valoree Swanson to leave our future's education alone. Tell the Texas House of Representatives to reject House Bill 1485.

Dear State Rep. Valoree Swanson;

Let's not politicize the classroom. Our children's education and future is not a political football and we shouldn't impose our beliefs on them at school. You and the rest of Texas Legislators that are considering supporting this bill will do serious harm to our children and our nation by passing this bill. America is built on the freedom of religion and I too strongly support everyone's right to choose what they believe, but inside the classroom the only way we can move our country forward is by teaching our students real, proven facts.
