Support Bill In Nashville Against Tethering Dogs

Please sign and share this petition nationwide in an effort to speak out loudly for all dogs throughout Nashville in an effort to stop the tethering of dogs in the area. Many believe that chaining up their dogs is a way to safely confine their dogs, but in reality, it can lead to some gruesome animal abuse and cruelty. We want to ensure a bill to tether dogs is not passed and pet owners must be required to confine their dogs in more humane methods.

In Nashville, TN, officials were considering passing a bill that would require dogs to be tethered and chained as a means of confining a pet, but such action would actually present harmful possibilities for the animal. Chaining a dog can lead to choking, possible hanging, imbedding into the neck, keeping the pet away from its food, water and shelter. Tethering an animal should never be an option in confining a pet to the home and family it is supposed to be with.

Nashville is actually considering this tethering option, with stipulations, but how can authorities literally monitor these stipulations? The options they will consider includes:

• A swivel is at both ends of the tether and the tether is free of tangles.
• The collar on the animal to which the swivel is attached is properly fitted and is a collar that is commonly recognized as a pet collar (choke and pinch collars would not be allowed).
• The tether is at least 15 feet in length, and pulley, running line or trolley systems also are at least 15 feet in length.
• The animal has access to water, shelter and dry ground at all times, and has access to adequate food.
• The animal is at least 6 months of age and has a current rabies vaccination.
• The animal is not sick, injured or in heat. • If there are multiple animals, each animal is tethered separately.
• The tethering device allows the tethered dog to lie down comfortably at all positions.

None of the options are a healthy and humane means of confining your dog and no method of chaining and tethering an animal should be considered throughout the state of Tennessee, including Nashville. We are asking for your support against the passage of this proposed bill by signing and sharing this petition nationwide on all media sites, and not allow this to occur. As we ask for a ban on tethering dogs, we encourage the authorities and lawmakers in the Mayor's office to consider other methods of confining a pet dog that is safer and more humane.

Mayor Karl Dean's Office, Councilman Duane Dominy, council members Jason Holleman & Phil Claiborne - We urge you to not even consider passing a tethering or chaining up of dogs throughout Nashville and anywhere throughout Tennessee! There has to be other methods of confining a dog on their own property and in their own homes rather than chaining it up, presenting it to many perils of the situation. This is clear and sure animal abuse and cruelty. Anyone who violates laws keeping their pets safe and sound at home, whether through tethering, letting the animals run loose and keeping them restrained outdoors in freezing weather or excessively hot temperatures need to be held accountable with fines and jail time. Such offenders need to have their animals removed and placed in more loving homes, banning such offenders from future pet ownership. This is getting to be such a crucial issue and people just do not seem to take pet ownership and its responsibility seriously enough. Protect the animals and step up on laws and regulations that will speak out in their name and for their specific welfare!
