Knowledge is Power

Education, is a very important aspect of a child's life that should be provided for them while growing up. According to the 26th Article of the UDHR, everyone, no matter what race, gender, ethnicity, they have, should be provided an education. Most countries abide by this right, mostly developed countries. But what about the other countries, the ones who still have to fight poverty? Countries that are still developing and do not yet have a stable system? Countries who do not yet have the power to give all the citizens their necessary needs? Countries like Indonesia.

Indonesia is currently working on a program, in where it is compulsory for every child to go to school for at least 9 years. Six for their primary years and three for their junior high school. After the nine years, they are able to choose whether they want to continue on to high school, or help their parents earn income for the family.

Although Indonesia has been showing progress with this aspect, there are still 2.5 million children, who do not receive any type of education, due to poverty and the lack of opportunities given to the children. Most children living in rural areas, have to go through obstacles- literally, to get to the place of learning and education. Some children have to walk through the forest alone, or have to cross rivers with unprofessional ‘rafts’, or even through unstable bridges that overlook dangerous rapids. These children sometimes have to risk their lives to go to school. Some parents are willing to let their child do these certain tasks to go to school, others are not willing to take this risk.

There is also the issue of staff shortages when it comes to education. According to statistics, there are 50 million students, compared to only 2.5 million teachers in Indonesia. It is considered as one of the biggest education systems in the world, fourth largest, behind China, India, and the United States.

This is an issue that should be brought up more often, since millions of children- who will be the future of our country, are not able to educate themselves. If our youngsters, aren’t able to get the education they deserve, then what’s going to happen to the future of our country? If we don’t try to fix this problem now, then who will?

By signing this petition, you will help raise awareness for the lack of education Indonesian children receive. For every signature given to this cause, you will be making the 2.5 million children’s voices louder than ever and in the long run, cause the government to take action towards it. This campaign focuses on raising awareness towards any violations made by countries of the 26th Article of the UDHR.
