Stop Deadly Wildlife Smuggling of Sharks & Stingrays thru CITES

Wildlife is in grave danger of extinction due to smuggling and trading.  Although it is illegal to do so, the trade continues internationally with wildlife and wildlife products, with a gain in the billions of dollars annually.  It is with great fortune that there is an international agreement to regulate wildlife that is threatened by trade, and the triennial Conference of the Parties coming up.  You can read more on this critical wildlife issue at https://secure.defenders.org/site/Advocacy;jsessionid=5CCAC85B385047F95282A6CD8AA9E48C.app213a?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=3091&s_src=3WDE1610A1XX1&s_subsrc=081416_eNews_august_enewsNonDonors&autologin=true&utm_campaign=CITESA2DEnews&utm_medium=email&utm_source=nondonors

Among those that need vital protection are various wildlife species of sharks and stingrays that dwell within our waters worldwide.  Rays seem to be more at risk that sharks.  The United States plays a critical role in protecting the various species that are being driven to the brink.  The greatest in danger are species that live in more shallow waters, being more accessible to fisheries.  One of the main threats to sharks and rays is overfishing although some of these animals are just killed out of a perception that they pose a danger to humans. Without protection like the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), sharks, rays and other wildlife sp0ecies will quickly become extinct.

The purpose of this petition is to urge the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Services to stop deadly wildlife smuggling of sharks and rays through the protection of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).  You can help in promoting all of our sharks and rays by signing and sharing this petition, adding your own comments and thoughts on the subject.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service – I am writing to thank you for your leadership in co-sponsoring various species of animals under Appendix I and II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).  I urge you to take a further critical stand in helping to promote the protection of all sharks and rays at the CITES impending meeting.  CITES listings are crucial to the regulation of international trade of these wildlife species.  The inclusion of these species under Appendix I and II will ensure that international trade is sustainable, legally acquired and traceable.  I urge you to take a strong stand to help promote the listing of these species at the CITES meeting.
