Give First Year Seminar Actual Meaning!

Over 1500 freshman students at APU have been placed in a First Year Seminar class. This class is designed to teach students about poverty in the US but is poorly designed and does not achieve it's difference making goal. Instead we propose that the money that is being put into the FYS class (like the prize for the best project) be transferred into service projects that students will participate in. By doing poverty related service projects like working in soup kitchens or cleaning up beaches we will achieve the desired goal of getting students to face poverty and to think about solutions to poverty. Our time will be better spent by doing actual work with those in poverty instead of sitting in a classroom and talking about it. The way many of us see it is that there are enough solutions to poverty but not enough people actually doing something about it. Who's ready to be actual difference makers at APU?
