Protect Grizzlies and Wolverines in British Columbia

Create new protected wildlife reserves in British Columbia for migrating grizzly bears and wolverines
Environmentalists in Canada hope to establish reserves for endangered animals who are now migrating due to global warming. They assert that a wide range of species live in wild areas that are not within protected national parks. Grizzly bears, wolverines, and trout are among the most likely to change migratory patterns due to climate change. Scientists suggest creating new protected areas in British Columbia to assist those animals who may need to relocate.
Grizzly bears have disappeared from 99% of their habitats in the lower 48 states and Mexico. Canada is one of the last remaining refuges for grizzlies, and British Columbia is home to roughly half of the Canadian population. Most experts agree that current protected parks are too small to cover the bears’ moving population. Like grizzlies, most North American Wolverines reside in the colder reaches of Alaska and Canada. Extensive trapping over the last two centuries has greatly fragmented and reduced their populations. Now climate change poses the largest threat to this private and stealthy animal.
Since both grizzlies and wolverines require a large individual range to sustain hunting activities; especially among males, habitat deterioration is especially detrimental to these species. Neither animal produces more than three offspring per litter, and neither will bear young in times of scarcity. These large predators can both be helped with the addition of new protected parklands in British Columbia. Ask Canadian leaders to allot more public lands for the protection of grizzly bears and wolverines.

Recent scientific studies indicate that grizzly bears, wolverines, and trout are changing their migratory patterns due to global climate change. Canada is in a unique position to protect these animals since these species seem to prefer the climate and terrain of British Columbia. As of now, protected national parks in British Columbia are not expansive enough to truly cover the range of these animals’ habitats. By adding more public land to protected areas, or by creating new protected parks, the Canadian government can help save these impressive endangered species, whose numbers will only diminish if no action is taken.
Grizzlies and wolverines have all but disappeared from the lower United States due to a long history of trapping and poaching, and the recent threat of climate change. The problem is exacerbated by both species’ need for a large individual hunting range among males and a small litter size among females. Please help these species by allotting more land for their protection.
