Stop rampant killing of animals in the Medical Colleges in the name of teaching MD

  • by: Babun Up

Fact: The MD-Pharmacology & Physiology students (doctors) are forced to kill animals in the names of experiments. They have to do it to pass MD. Rampant killing of rabbits, guinea pigs, rats etc. are going on all over India in different Medical Colleges.

Law: 1. No repeatative experiment in animal (i.e. experiments are not permitted if the inference is already known, proven)

2. Governmet bans experiments on live animals..law permits experiments for search of new molecules only (Times of India, 21st April, 2012)

Law violation:.

a. The experiments done in these Medical Colleges are being done for 'practice' of Bioassay and isolated heart experiments (the heart of rabbits are separated and effects of some drugs on it tested)- by no way they are new. THESE ARE REPEATATION only.

b. Such experiments are NOT done in these medical Colleges for search of any new drug/molecule.

c. In the MD examinations (Pharmacology/Physiology)- killing and demonstration of some age old procedures are done on a routine basis- this is NO SEARCH OF NEW MOLECULE, THIS IS REPEATATION only.

Possible action:

1. Medical Council of India should send notification to all Medical Colleges to stop all such illegal experiments.

2. Penalizing the Colleges & the concerned Departmental authorities as per law.

3. Notification by the Dean/Registrars of the Medical Universities to all Medical Colleges to stop all such experiments-permanently.

4. Notification by the State Governments to all the Medical Colleges to stop such experiments, to free all the caged animals from the animal houses of different medical colleges and strict action to all those medical Colleges to performed ILLEGAL BREEDING of laboratory animals.
