Recess for Basis Phoenix Central Children

Children need recess. They need that outlet to run off any pent up energy from sitting in classrooms for hours on end. I am a parent of two Basis students. This is our second year at Basis Central Phoenix. We attend as many of the Basis events as possible to learn about the curriculum and how the school is set to run. So it can come as a surprise when my fourth grader came home the first week and tells me that they do not have any recess whatsoever. One of the reasons I chose Basis was for the structure of how they teach the kids and how they prepare students for success when they reach high school and beyond. That being said I know I need my two 15 minute breaks during my work day, so why don't our children get theirs? Why does recess stop at 3rd grade at BCP? There are several studies on how recess is important to children's learning ability and how successful they are during the school day. Research shows it actually will help them learn better in school! (American Heart Association: http://news.heart.org/recess-helps-kids-learn-better-in-school/) As a parent yourself, you might feel different than I do on the subject. That's ok. I hope a majority of you do feel the way I do and will help sign this petition so we can forward to the head of the school and possibly to send along to the corporate Basis office. You can reach out to our BCP head of school Rosalind Thompson at rosalind.thompson@basised.com as I have already done as well.
