Open Ltr to Elantra Cunningham Who Filed Charges Against Michael Hammons

You probably didn’t know…

You probably didn’t know that you’d be gone as long as you were.

You probably didn’t know how fast the temperature rises in a parked car – even with the window cracked open. (The temperature inside a vehicle can rise almost 20 degrees from the outside temperature in just 10 minutes. In 20 minutes, it can rise almost 30 degrees and the longer you wait, the higher it goes. http://mydogiscool.com/newsroom/learn-more/) And no, it wouldn’t have made any difference if you had a dish of water in your car for your pup.

You probably didn’t know how fast a dog could succumb to heat exhaustion inside of a car because they aren’t capable of sweating like humans.

You probably didn’t know how many dogs die in hot cars every year – not because their guardians don’t care, but because, like you, they didn’t know the facts. (Hundreds of dogs die each year from being left in hot cars. Just one day after your incident, a dog died in South Carolina inside of a hot car because he didn’t have a Michael Hammons who cared enough to break through a window.)

But hopefully, you know now that the man who smashed your car window to save your dog did just that. He saved your dog from dying a slow and agonizing death where she burns from the inside out, with her organs slowly shutting down one by one until her heart finally stops beating. It’s a horrible way to die.

And hopefully now that you’ve had time to step back and calm down, you’ll drop the charges against Michael Hammons, knowing that without him and what he did, you probably wouldn’t have your beloved dog sitting next to you today. Mr. Hammons told the police, "Glass, they make new glass every day, but they could never replace that dog." Doesn’t this prove how much he cared about someone else’s dog – your dog?! Shouldn’t this quote have been coming from you? He was willing to go to jail to save your dog’s life! But instead of thanking him for being the hero that he was, you pressed charges against him.

Please, do the right thing and thank him after dropping all charges.
