Please sign and share this petition nationwide on all media in an effort to stop hog farmers from endangering humans and putting them at risk of contamination due to diseased and deceased pigs that are improperly disposed of. This is such a disgusting practice that so easily passes on disease, creating a highly dangerous epidemic to all life where contamination occurs!

There is currently an outbreak of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) in North Carolina that often results from improper handling of dead hogs. The public is being advised of this problem as a precautionary measure but the real problem lies in the fact that hog farms are disposing of infected and dead hog carcasses through improper procedures that puts everyone’s health at risk.

A spokesperson investigating this situation states “I have seen first-hand the unsafe disposal methods commonly employed on hog facilities. Hogs are commonly buried in low-lying areas adjacent to wetlands.   They often sit out for days waiting to be transported for off-site disposal while blood and other fluids seep into the ground.” It is common practice that the dead pigs are buried in mass graves along the coastal properties where the facilities are located. This causes a high risk for contamination of shallow groundwater and nearby waterways, allowing for the transmission of bacteria and pathogens to drinking water supplies and recreational waters.

Currently there is little to no government oversight of carcass disposal in the midst of this epidemic, and we are calling on the State to take action as authorized by law to protect the citizens of North Carolina. Hog farms and facilities need to develop new, humane, safe methods of disposing dead and ill pig carcasses and stop spreading disease in North Carolina waterways. Additionally, the State and Local health departments need to get involved for periodic inspections of Hog Farm facilities and their practices to ensure these unhealthy practices are no longer implemented.

Please sign and share this petition nationwide on all media in an effort to stop hog farmers from endangering humans and putting them at risk of contamination due to diseased and deceased pigs that are improperly disposed of. Let’s encourage the farms to find a more proper method of these procedures that will not endanger anyone and present health risks.

North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture –You need to declare a State of Emergency regarding the hog farms and their improper disposal of dead and sick pig carcasses in shallow graves along the waterways. These practices are contaminated all the waterways throughout North Carolina, putting everyone’s health at risk. Please take action against these hog deaths and their disposal by the hog farms and facilities. The Government and Health Departments need to get involved through regular inspections and by instituting government oversights over the hog industry’s handling of their procedures and this health epidemic. What they are doing is a health risk to all and need to be changed immediately for a healthier outcome for all.
