"Funny weather we're having!" Floods. Droughts. Storms. If we're going to adapt we need to know the facts.
As the impacts of climate change continue to unfold at increasing speed around the world, it is clear that we will need to work hard together both to minimise the changes that occur and to adapt to those changes we can't stop. To respond to climate change effectively, we will need a well-informed population who are willing to deal with the realities of a very challenging situation.
95% of climate scientists agree that current climate change is caused by humans. However, despite the growing threat to our way of life and the broad agreement regarding its cause, the BBC continues to under-represent scientific consensus about the issue, framing climate denial as part of a 'viable debate'.
It is the responsibility of the BBC to give the public facts rather than confusing spin. Humans can be smart and adaptable in the face of a crisis. But we can't take effective action when we are being encouraged to stick our heads in the sand. It is the responsibility of our public broadcasting service not to distort or underplay one of the most important issues facing our society today.
We need to stand together to demand informative news coverage that gives us the truth. Without the truth and the ability to face it together, we have far less capacity to make the right personal, public and political choices in the coming decades.
Please sign this petition to demand that the BBC provide fact-led information about climate change by adopting a protocol that requires reporters to cite the scientific consensus even when covering stories about climate denial.
