Tell Trump Mosques Need to Stay Open

The vast majority of Muslims practice their religion peacefully, and their religion teaches them respect for all life. So why has Donald Trump recommended that United States leaders close mosques in response to the recent terrorist attack in Paris? His recent polemic alleges that mosques are bastions of hatred. The first amendment guarantees freedom of religion in the United States, but it appears Trump is more than willing to trample all over first amendment rights, if it affords him an opportunity for posturing.

It appears that Trump has no ability or willingness to differentiate between religious devotees and terrorists. Closing US mosques would not deter terrorism, but it has the potential to incite violence against peace-seeking Muslim families. Please join with me in demanding that Trump retract his hateful suggestion to close US mosques.

Dear Mr. Trump:

We the undersigned are outraged at your proposal to close US mosques. Doing so would in no way deter terrorism. It might, however, incite prejudice and even violence against peaceful, law-abiding Muslim worshippers. Mosques do not teach hatred; only individual extremists teach hatred and violence. The Koran, by contrast, teaches people to seek peace and respect all life. Please retract your recommendation that United States leaders move to close mosques.
