The California Senate just passed a new bill that would make all of California a "Sanctuary State". California would be the first entire state to go against Trump and decide to protect immigrants from his insane deportation tactics. The actual legislation does two things. One is that it bars state and local law enforcement from using resources, including funding, equipment, and personel to aid federal immigration enforcement. The second is that law enforcement wouldn't be allowed to ask anyone in their detention their immigration status.
One of the biggest benefits to this change is that California would become a safer state. This is because right now if an undocumented person interacts with law enforcement in anyway, they are asked their immigration status and that info is passed on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and that person could face deportation. But that means there are people who will not report crimes they witness or that are committed against them for fear of deportation and that makes everyone less safe. If you take that constant threat away, then the community and police can work together better to keep California crime free!
Not to mention that because of Trump, the landscape of the immigration process in this country is constantly changing and not always in a good way. In fact, sometimes ICE agents will arrest folks outside of schools, churches or even their immigration lawyer's office. Meaning that these people have no way to contribute to their communities or make their way towards documentation. Instead, they just live in fear. These tactics are paralyzing economies and communities across the country.
