Black Mold Made Me Sick - Help Me Fight for the Women Living at This Alaskan Facility

  • by: Amy Nicole
  • recipient: DOC Commissioner Dean Williams, Governor Bill Walker, Alaska
I recently completed a sentence at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center (HMCC) in Alaska. While I was there, I became very sick due to rampant black mold all over the facility. I have written to prison officials and politicians multiple times, only to be met with silence.

When I left, I promised the other women -- particularly those who will spend the rest of their lives at HMCC -- that I would use my voice to eliminate the environmental health threats there.

Please sign my petition to urge the Department of Corrections (DOC) Commissioner and Gov. Walker to eliminate black mold at HMCC!

A woman who worked on the maintenance crew at HMCC says that the mold was visible around windows, corners, and floors throughout Hiland, but especially in house 2. The maintenance crew was constantly instructed to paint and tile over the mold, but never used anything to kill it.

This isn't the first time the Alaska DOC has failed to protect women living there: it was recently under FBI investigation for multiple deaths that have occurred while in DOC custody. The investigation resulted in the replacement of the DOC Commissioner.

Please stand up for the women living at HMCC and sign my petition to urge DOC Commissioner Williams and Gov. Walker to eliminate harmful black mold at this facility. Thank you.
Commissioner Williams and Gov. Walker,

We the undersigned urge you to eliminate black mold at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center (HMCC). Multiple inmates have reported rampant black mold all over the facility, which is making the inmates sick. One former inmate has written to prison officials and politicians multiple times, only to be met with silence.

A woman who worked on the maintenance crew at HMCC says that the mold was visible around windows, corners, and floors throughout Hiland, but especially in house 2. The maintenance crew was constantly instructed to paint and tile over the mold, but never used anything to kill it.

Some women will spend their entire lives at this facility. They deserve to be treated with respect.

Please eliminate black mold at HMCC with urgency. Thank you.
