Shut down Indian Point Nuclear Plant, just 30 miles from New York City!

  • by: JODY ROMERO
  • recipient: President Obama, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Governor Andrew Cuomo

On May 9, a nuclear power plant's transformer exploded just 30 miles north of mid-town Manhattan. A nuclear official once called the Indian Point Nuclear Power Facility "an accident waiting to happen" - and now it has. Will the next one be even bigger, or will we heed this warning?

Indian Point provides only 5% of New York City and Westchester County's energy needs, yet poses a tremendous threat to the region. The plant rests upon two active fault lines, bringing to mind the 300,000 people forced to evacuate in Fukushima, Japan, after the 2011 earthquake caused a nuclear meltdown there.

Far more people live in New York than Fukushima. It is absolute lunacy to mix huge populations, nuclear energy, and seismic activity.

While the May 9 explosion posed no imminent threat of radiation, it did leak thousands of gallons of oil into the Hudson River. It seems absolutely irresponsible and irrational to jeopardize the health and well being of so many to further degrade the fragile ecosystem of the beautiful, vibrant Hudson River. We are asking that serious investments be made in renewable energy sources and that Indian Point be shut down forever, before a tragedy of huge proportions occurs.

The plant's permit expires at the end of the year. Tell President Obama and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to shut the plant down, and tell Governor Andrew Cuomo that if the feds won't listen, he can still do it himself by denying its new water permit!

Please shut down the Indian Point Nuclear Power Facility. Nuclear power is neither safe nor clean, and it is absolute lunacy to mix huge populations, nuclear energy, and seismic activity!

In 1976, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Robert Pollard called Indian Point, which sits on two fault lines, "an accident waiting to happen." Now that we've seen one accident in the May 9 fire, will we heed its warning, or will the next accident be even worse? Let's not risk New York City becoming the next Fukushima or anything close to it. Furthermore, even when the risk of radiation leaks is minimal, oil leaks like the on on May 9 occur, and it is irresponsible and irrational to further degrade the fragile ecosystem of the beautiful, vibrant Hudson River.

[YOUR PERSONAL COMMENT HERE]

It's time to move away from nuclear power and make serious investments in renewable energy sources, before a tragedy of huge proportions occurs. Deny Indian Point's renewal permits, and shut it down now!
