The Road Too Far : to the directors & writers of the Supernatural

  • by: Spn Petition

This letter has been edited to make it suitable for the signatories to read.
To clarify my thesis, I've added a lot of screen caps in its longer version: http://spnpetition.tumblr.com/post/90738789556/the-road-too-far-directors-writers-of-the

Before I start, I must reveal that the English isn't my mother tongue. Please excuse me for the grammatical mistakes. I'm too concerned about a show thats lost it's identity to keep silent.

In my country, I've known of a lot of people who had loved Supernatural for years, but most of them left the fandom during the season 9. And according to the Tumblr posts, there are not a few fans who left this fandom even if they're the local fans. So I can't just sit around and pretend everything is ok.
The recent staffs of the Supernatural, unless you are not to read this petition, please just watch episodes of the early seasons, which is closely linked to the way how to inculcate a life in the show. I want to recommend you to watch some episodes:

Season 1 episode 1 Pilot
Season 1 episode 6 Skin
Season 2 episode 2 Everybody loves a clown
Season 2 episode 13 Houses Of The Holy
Season 3 episode 8 A Very Supernatural Christmas
Season 4 episode 16 On the Head of a Pin

Even if you are the one who has been part of the show since it was started, you can't justify your problematic output in the recent season. In fact, that's worse.

This letter isn't gonna harsh considering your controversial outputs. But if you can't take the chance, at least read a criticism written by Tessa Marlene in Spoiler TV: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/12/supernatural-season-9-so-far-gripe.html
(Tessa, please let me know if this is a problem or if you prefer to delete this link)

Like me, many other Supernatural fans must be very proud of 1-5 seasons of the show. And I bet many of you remember the same thing: show's philosophical depth, multidimensional character, various camera work, awesome plot, classic rock, modern-interpreted myth.
To my consternation it had completely disappeared.

In this letter I aim to present the differences between the show's early seasons(1-5 seasons) and the recent season(season 9) then compare them. So, directors & writers of the Supernatural, here are 10 reasons why you're losing the show.

1. You're losing the show's humanism it had before

Add humanism. That's not the way the characters become weak but become strong.

Solve the problem of the vessels including Adam Milligan. Make the Winchesters be worried about a problem with saving possessed people. It is not to be underestimated that every possessed people has consent. Do not make the Winchesters and Castiel just laugh when someone had sexual intercourse with a possessed person. Do not belittle the people who consecrated themselves to God by a vow of chastity. They are just people who have Individual faiths; they must be respected and recognized. Needless to say, every races has to be described the same value.

2. You're losing it's quality plot it had in the past

A good plot is a vital prerequisite for making a good episode. A good episode is a vital prerequisite for making a good season.
In the early season, the show brought us Sam's point of view and Dean's per one episode. In season 4, they even could depict Castiel's anguish, Dean's frustration and Sam's desire to power of the exorcise at the same time. The point is, there is no boring character. So don't even think about throwing away anyone's point of view.

Don't kill a character just for by reason of your lack of well-planned plot. There is a lot of differences between killing characters accompanying well established plot and just killing characters as a plot device(by the way, good bye Tessa).

I'm just a college student but, even in my major lecture, nobody throws away the characters just like you did because a consuming death of character is going to be turn out to have no effect except for the statement "They killed again, yeap" (or "LOL, you're gonna bring him or her back anyway")

3. You're losing your backbone being swayed by childish mentions

If there is a someone who send a childish mention to you because you don't make their ships be a canon, just say "No, I'm afraid not". You should not have answered "Let's see" unless you want to go actual romance series. You might say that's because you don't want to hurt shipper's feelings, but this is not the way. You ought to have told them honestly beforehand.
All you have to do is writing a jaw-dropping show so that anyone cannot grumble anymore. Let them know Supernatural has a lot of glorious features more than the ships. Many of the fans are willing to stand up for your choice.

4. You're losing the ability to take control of the characters

Adding beard to the characters is no depiction about maturity. That's just the way show biological maturity. Still, the Winchesters lie to each other and bully like a child as if they've never been adults. This is the season 9. They've been through a lot of things, but they've never actually grow. In fact, they are bearded children. It is hard to believe that they were the same people who were able to consider life & death from a philosophical point of view and talk about theism & atheism in the episode named Houses of the holy.
In the early season, there were no characters who has to speak out loud in order to express his or her emotion. Because writers of the Supernatural had depicted character's inner view with a circumstance, sometimes even with a nuance. But now we're not much know of our beloved characters, despite they are screaming, yelling, punching, bulling, grieving for the entire episode.

5. You're losing the impression of a color

The impression of a color in season 1 was more like a film. It was a differentiation policy that makes the show special. Brightness and darkness, good and evil, day and night, humor and angst. At that time I used to think the Supernatural has the most elegant composition of a picture I've ever seen. There was not much of a color so that the audience could see what was important and wasn't. That makes the audience concentrate on the appearance of the monster. And of course, the yellow-eyed demon is way much scarier than last boss of the season 9, Metatron.
But in season 9, nobody cares about the impression of a color. Nowadays It's too colorful, and it's unbelievably distracting. Too colorful to concentrate last battle of the season.

6. You're losing It's own American road trip view

As a fan from another country, I've adored a view of American road trip in the Supernatural. Because In my real life, I'm too busy to go road trip. It makes me frustrated. I bet other people who watch this show know this feeling. In earlier days, Supernatural have made up for it to audiences. This show has that very special merits that made us all sit up and enjoy by portraying various locations of the America.

I've heard It adapts the theme of traveler from the book named "On the road" written by Jack Kerouac, the glorious climax towards which travel has been straining. Every time I watch the scenery of the early season, I even feel a sense of freedom. And this is a proof for that "Staffs were even so much concerned about a camera work because they really cherished the show" instead of "I don't know, there is too much drama to reveal, so... Let's just shot. End".

7. You're losing it's fantastically old-fashioned sound

Classic rock- I know how expensive it can be. If the budget is far from enough, you must consider this: The budget was often shorter in the early season than now. But they have made up for it by using insinuating directing and creating amazing idea. Just like when they show us the shadow angel wings. Just like when Dean's hell is portrayed by the terrified eyes(which is one of the most delicate organs of the body).

If the budget is really the case, use the original sound track composed by Christopher Lennertz. It will help you deal with a royal fan base.

8. You're losing what your job truly means

There is something in life besides airing. You are the artists. As you know, artists animate characters and bring the series to life. That's a very fantastic job. And you should proud of yourself but, don't think fans are just grumble even when they truly love and cherish the show. Every criticizing has own meaning.

Just remember how many fan loved, and loves this show. And always remember that staffs of the early season have fought to make this show beautiful, so that you don't forget this show is not just yours.

9. You're losing the director Kim Manners again

After all, this is his posthumous work. Please try not to make fans cry every time think over him.
