My neighborhood is full of litter because of McDonald's

I live in St. Paul, MN, near a McDonald's. I can't leave my house without seeing litter on the streets. People constantly litter, and McDonald's does nothing about this. I do not eat at or support any of McDonald's practices, and I do not enjoy living near one.

I want McDonald's to do three things:
1. Hire employees to clean up garbage from their restaurant around every McDonald's restaurant.
2. Put more garbage bins on their property (accessible from car windows)
3. Make an effort to use recyclable, reusable, and biodegradable packaging.

I've sent this letter to McDonald's.

I am writing concerning a McDonald’s restaurant in my area. The address is 471 Marion St, St Paul, MN 55103. I live on the same block as this restaurant, and I cannot leave my house without seeing garbage from your restaurant on the streets. I do not eat at or support your restaurant and its practices, and I do not litter. I am extremely irritated by the high level of garbage on the streets. Your company does nothing about this. McDonald’s restaurants in other areas have employees pick up garbage around the restaurant, such as in the UK and in Manhattan. I occasionally pick up garbage around my neighborhood, because I care about my neighborhood. Due to the lack of action from your company, McDonald’s has made the impression that it does not care about my neighborhood or the fact that its presence is causing our streets to be full of litter.

I would like to see your company do three things to combat the growing amount of litter and pollution on the streets and in our rivers and waterways. First, I would like your company either hire employees to pick up trash on the streets near your restaurants, or have current employees do this. Secondly, I would like to see more garbage bins on the property of your restaurants, especially those accessible from car windows. I believe this would prevent people going through the drive through from littering, as they could more easily reach garbage bins from their cars. And, finally, I would like to see your company make more of an effort to use recyclable and biodegradable packaging. Studies by the CWA show that 49% of garbage on the streets originate from fast food restaurants, and up to 31% of this could be eliminated if reusable alternatives were used.

In my opinion, living near a McDonald’s is a very bad experience. I would like your company to change that, for everyone that lives near a McDonald’s. The level of litter on my streets is unacceptable. It is not my responsibility to pick it up. I would not have to pick it up if I didn’t live near a McDonald’s.

I hope you will consider my solutions. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
