Demand to preserve native eastern woodland from housing development in Schaumburg

School district 211 auctioned off the last 62 acres of eastern woodland to M/I Homes of Chicago LLC. This wooded area is bound by Summit to the west, Plum Grove to the east and Wise Road to the south. This area of beautiful woodland is the last sizable untouched region home to native plants, birds and animals. It would better serve our community to save this area of eastern woodland under the auspices of Schaumburg Park District for future generations to enjoy. As has been done successfully at Spring Valley, this area can also be used to preserve natural habitats in our already overly populated village. Our schools are becoming full and our children are in dire need of neighboring nature and space for unstructured play and to learn natural history. We, the citizens of Schaumburg, are asking you to reverse the erroneous decision to sell this land and to preserve it for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.

Update #44 years ago
It turns out for various reasons, real estate developers are backing out of this. I think we have a real chance at saving this open green space. Please forward to friends and family. I will continue to write letters district 211. The hope is that Nature Conservancy will restore this land to it's original beauty.

Dear friends,
I think M/I builder withdrew due to this area being primarily Illinois wetland. This limits their building capacity. I have heard, the primary reason for D211 to sell is to import more children in order to keep schools full, thus job security for them. This will not benefit our children or the current citizens of Schaumburg.
I will attend Coffee with the Counsel (1000 W Schaumburg Rd) in Schaumburg at 9:00 Sat to discuss this issue. Join me if you can.

Hello friends,
This land is still "up for sale" for housing development. Please get your friends and neighbors to sign my petition. Maybe we can restore native forest/savanna/prairie for future generations.
Schaumburg environmental panel meeting the first Thursday of the month at Atcher Municipal. I also plan to attend the next "coffee with the council". Please join me if you can.

Greetings friends,
I will be meeting with Loren Humel of district 211 Monday to go over the specific meetings in which the decision was made to auction this territory for housing development.
Given most people seem against it, I say we try to put it on the ballot for the citizens of Schaumburg: preserve this area vs. build houses.
There will be an article in the Daily Herald Monday under the opinion section.
cordially,
Nicholas Skyba II DO
