Tell the UK Government not to Scrap the Environment

The current UK government is quite a long way from living up to its promise of being "the greenest government ever." A pattern has emerged: Cameron's government weakens conservation laws and renewable energy initiatives while providing very generous tax breaks to the fossil fuel industry.

Now, it looks like it might get even worse. Cameron's cabinet reshuffle, which involved, among other things, putting a climate sceptic in charge of energy, threatens to lead to yet more trouble for the UK's environment and people.

According to the Guardian, insiders fear that the coalition is going to downgrade the green agenda while promoting fossil fuels, especially natural gas. This is not good news for the environment or the long term future of the country. Tell the government to not even consider putting the most important issue of all on the back burner.

We the undersigned ask that you do everything in your power to ensure that sustainable policies, including those on renewable energy and conservation, are not weakened in response to pressure from industry and anti-environment politicians.

The long term future of the country, and the planet as a whole, depends on sustainability being prioritised now, not abandoned in a sop to short term and unsustainable industries. This government has already weakened environmental initiatives while at the same time using tax payers money to prop up the fossil fuel industry.

Please make sure that this pattern does not continue. It is still not too late to make the early promise of being “the greenest government ever” look at least faintly plausible.
