Girl Scouts USA - Make the World a Better Place with GS Cookies

Tell Sarah Gromley to replace junk food Girl Scout Cookies with healthy, nutritious ones.

Girl Scout Cookies are contrary to Girl Scout Law that includes "..., make the world a better place, ....".

Sarah Gromley, GS USA Chief Marketing Officer, said at a recent 2015 marketing conference: "... while everyone knows and loves the Girl Scout brand—and certainly goes crazy for our cookies!—what I wanted to share as candidly as possible is both the unique digital marketing challenges we face and also those challenges that are quite similar to other major brands. We’re all trying to understand and improve the customer experience; we’re all using data to inform new platform builds, campaign development, and resource allocation decisions; and we’re all trying to figure it out as we go. ..."

Well Sarah, to be different from the other major brands, how about breaking away from the junk food crowd and make GS Cookies a sterling example for the girls and the rest of the processed food industry! Then the girls will have a product they can truly boast about and feel proud to market such a product.

I was given two boxes of GS Cookies, Samoas and Thin Mints. On the side of the boxes is the text: "The Girl Scout COOKIE PROGRAM Selling Girl Scout Cookies helps girls develop 5 skills that they use throughout their lives. 1) Goal Setting 2) Decision Making 3) Money Management 4) People Skills 5) Business Ethics.... Proceeds help your local Girl Scouts do big things."

I would think that one of the goals every girl should set and strive to meet is "be healthy and consume nutritious foods". For Decision Making, to support the goal of being healthy is to avoid consuming foods that are detrimental to health and as part of People Skills and Business Ethics, to " make the world a better place" by promoting nutrition and avoidance of unhealthy foods.

The current GS cookies are a poster child for empty calorie processed junk food that is a large contributor to childhood obesity and long term chronic health problems. The primary ingredients are sugar, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, and white flour. There are about 150 calories per ounce, of which only 4 calories is protein (1 g). A one ounce serving of Samoas also contains 125 mg of sodium. In addition, the cookies contain sorbitol (sugar alcohol) that for some people causes serious gastric distress.

The GSA, to assist the girls to make the world a better place, should replace the ingredients of their cookies with healthy nutrients and set the example for their customers.
