Bermudians Against The Customs Tariff Amendment (No.2) Act 2018 (Sugar Tax)

This sugar tax is not in the best interest of the people of our country. The thought of it combating obesity and diabetes is truly foolish! Sugar is not the lone cause of obesity or diabetes, so implementing a tax on only one of the lesser causes is absurd. People will most definitely continue to indulge in high fat & greasy foods, and have a lack of exercise, even with a sugar tax, so what good will it do to create a healthier nation?! Perhaps, this tax is more so about regaining the money the government has squandered. Thus, a terrible attempt to get us out of the hole they put us in. It's amazing how they make mistakes and we the people carry the burden. They are surely trying to fix a financial crisis on the backs of a people that can't afford it. That is a crisis in itself. Our prices here are already to high are they not?! Locals and visitors alike struggle to manage the price of inflation every year. Do we really need another bout with higher prices? This tax, if enacted is just another reckless and thoughtless act The Government will impose on us. The chance of it running small businesses out of business is very high. Who wants to buy an overpriced snowball during the summer?! What will happen to employees when a company takes a hit from the high cost of importation, or the lack of sales, because they have had to skyrocket the price of their product? Did our Government think of the potential for job losses?! Do they even care about the potential for more out of work Bermudians?!

Mexico implemented a sugary beverage excise tax in 2014.
- the tax raised revenue but has had no effect on obesity.
- the tax hurt those who could least afford it.
- there was a negative economic effect with 1700 jobs lost in impacted businesses.
- the taxes raised were not invested on health initiatives.
- even a study done by supporters of the Mexico tax shows a drop in calories so minuscule it would not be measurable on a bathroom scale.

Denmark introduced a "Fat Tax" in 2011 by a vote of MP's. 15 months later in January of 2013 the Danish MP's voted to repeal it. It was a failure for many reasons among them:
- it led to inflation,
- job losses,
- often cited that it "clobbered the poor" and
- it did not have a positive health impact.

Don't let this happen to us Bermuda. Let's make our voices heard. If you stand against this preposterous sugar tax sign this petition to show our concern, before we suffer the high prices with regret tomorrow.
