Using Nash Hernandez Sr building as Intergenerational Resource & Activity Center

PETITION in support of using the Nash Hernandez, Sr. building for an Intergenerational Resource and Activity Center to serve low-income seniors and low-income children 1 – 4 years old with age-appropriate education, health, and recreation services.

My signature below expresses my support to use the vacant Nash Hernandez, Sr. building on the north shore of Lady Bird Lake on the Butler Hike and Bike Trail east of I-35 for use as Austin’s 1st Intergenerational Resource and Activity Center. I understand that this is a public-private partnership and the City will retain ownership of the building and that the IRAC Advisory Group will provide all additional funds needed to remodel the building, acquire and install indoor/outdoor furnishings and equipment, adjust and improve the landscape for accessibility to meet or exceed the Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines, and for all health, education and intergenerational program costs. These additional funds shall be provided by private sector foundations, corporations, individual donors, and state and federal funds without impact to the operational budget of the Parks and Recreation Department. The only City of Austin investment the IRAC Advisory Group relies upon is the already approved $3.3 million in Certificates of Obligation passed by City Council in 2022 which were set-aside to remodel this building for shared community use. I also understand that using the building exclusively for an Intergenerational Resource and Activity Center from 7am to 7pm, Monday – Friday may require a City Council approved change to the Holly Shores/Edward Rendon Master Plan because the Parks and Recreation Department had planned to use the building for administrative offices with very limited, after-hours community use. The outdoor areas shall be open for public use except for a small, fenced outdoor toddlers’ playground and seniors’ equipment which is required by law for licensed and accredited childcare and senior day health facilities. I understand that the IRAC’s planned additional outdoor exercise equipment, community gardens and food forest will be accessible to the public and that planned outdoor activities will not affect the public use of the Butler Hike and Bike Trail. My signature below expresses my support to City Council to change the Holly Shores/Edward Rendon Master Plan to use the Nash Hernandez, Sr. building for an Intergenerational Resource and Activity Center and NOT for city administrative offices.
