Crack Down on Whale Fishing in Iceland!

  • by: Chris Wolverton
  • recipient: Jon Bjarnason, Minister of Fisheries, Iceland

Iceland continues to hunt endangered fin whales in defiance of an international ban, and exports most of its whale meat to Japan. This year, Iceland plans to slaughter 180 of its whales.

Most whale meat is intended for human consumption, but a recent joint statement by the Animal Welfare Institute, Environmental Investigation Agency, Whale and Dolphin Conservation and the Iruka & Kujira (Dolphin and Whale) Action Network stated that Iceland planned to use some of their whale meat in luxury dog treats. These plans were thankfully halted, but the idea suggests a disturbing market niche that could potentially be explored in other ways.

Using endangered whale meat in dog treats and similar items is an inexcusable waste of life. Please sign the petition to tell Iceland's Minister of Fisheries to crack down on whale fishing in Iceland!

Using endangered whale meat in dog treats and similar items is an inexcusable waste of life. We respectfully urge you to put an end to whale fishing in Iceland and penalize fisherman for defying the ban. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
