Why do insurance companies have the choice on what breed of dog you choose

  • by: Chris Kovash
  • recipient: Home owners insurance companies, specifically American Family

My dad has had his home owners insurance with American Family insurance for over 30 years. Of those 30 years, he has had chow chow's for about 20 years. There has never been an issue ever. He got a random letter saying they do random home checks, the home owners do not need to be home, and they do not need access to the back yard. A guy representing American Family insurance came by unanounced one day. My dad met him out front, his dogs were barking. The guy said "You have dogs?". My dad said, "Yes, 2 chows, one 15 years old & the other is 13 years old".

About a month later they got a letter from American Family insurace stating they needed to get rid of their chow chow's or their insurance policy would be dropped. How does this advocate responsible dog guardianship? Remember, there was no incidence that provocted this. So what is he supposed to do with his older beloved dogs? Put them down? Take them to a shelter? This is shocking & unacceptable.

Hello everyone, Thank you again for your support. This petition is struggling, so remember to forward to your family & friends on Facebook & Twitter. Remember, this doesn't only affect people who have Chows, it affects any breed "they" consider unstable. That includes mixes, Chow mix breed, husky mix, etc. Where will they stop? Thank you again for your support.
