The Dufur City Council voted to modify the ordinance and dropped the verbage banning roosters. In other words, we did it! Thanks to each and every (35k+!!!) of you!!!
We received a letter from the city stating Dallas is still considered a nuisance under the current ordinances. But that the mayor was putting a "stay" on the matter until we can request and have a public hearing about the nuisance ordinance with the city council. Baby steps!
We will have a date for the public hearing hopefully Tuesday March 11.****
**Update** After all of the amazing support, we have received a letter from the City with a scheduled hearing of Tuesday, February 25th at 7pm. We are encouraging locals to attend!**
The City of Dufur is demanding that Ayla remove her beloved rooster, named Dallas.
Ayla bought Dallas with her own money in June of 2012 and has been working with him for almost two years in anticipation of showing him for 4-H this summer! Dallas spends his days in the arms of his favorite girl, and has even been found snuck into her bedroom for some special treats. He is not a loud rooster- in fact, our neighbors don't even hear him when he crows most days.
Dallas came to our home before the City of Dufur implemented an ordinance banning roosters within the city limits. At the time we got him, we checked the ordinances, and there was nothing applicable to roosters. We were told in August of 2013 that he would be grandfathered in, but have discovered since receiving the letter demanding his removal that there is NOT a grandfather clause.
The complaint about Dallas's noise is not only ridiculous, but also a personal attack on our family. We will have statements from neighbors as well as the support of our community through signatures and a presence at the city council meeting March 11th.
Ayla's only request is that I ask everyone that I know to please help her keep her Dallas. She is only 5 years old, and does not understand why she has to rehome her best friend when she followed all of the right rules. She has even offered to pay the City of Dufur ALL of her Disney Land money (all $186.75 of it!) in order to keep Dallas.
Help us show the city that Dallas should stay where he belongs: With a girl that loves him more than any rooster could ever dream of!!
Petition Letter to the City Council of Dufur, Oregon
Allow Dallas the Rooster to stay in Dufur
Backyard chickens provide many benefits, including improving local food security and contributing to a just and sustainable food system. Not only does chicken-keeping promote food security, but it also provides valuable educational opportunities for young people to learn about the source of their food. Enthusiasm for urban chickens has grown throughout North America in the past few years, as increased attention is paid to issues of sustainability, food security, and consumption of locally grown food. Many North American cities have already enacted or updated by-laws to allow the keeping of urban chickens.
Dallas the Rooster was a part of the community of Dufur before the ordinance banning him was implemented. He is not merely a rooster, but a companion and 4-H project for a young girl who did nothing other than follow the rules. We, along with the undersigned, are asking that you allow Dallas to stay at his residence until his demise.
