Request MOFD's Fred Weil to step down and let the community move forward

This petition requests MOFD Board Member Fred Weil to step down from his position after 12 years of service to the community due to actions taken by himself and the MOFD Board in 2008, granting MOFD Chief Pete Nowicki $110,000 in extra compensation beyond what his contract allowed. This action did not just cost the District $110,000 in compensation expenses but generated $94,000 in additional annual pension benefits which, with inflation adjustments, would cost the District’s pension plan $4,000,000 over the course of 30 years of retirement.

Claims have recently been made by the pension plan administrators that the 2008 Board actually broke California open meeting laws (Brown Act) in the course of granting Nowicki his salary increases. Whether or not this is the case would be for others to determine. However, there can be no doubt that granting Nowicki a $110,000 “bonus” which was then parlayed into millions of dollars of retirement benefits shows an extreme lack of judgement on the 2008 Board’s, including Mr. Weil’s, part. The Board and Mr. Weil violated the public trust. As long as he remains a voting member of the MOFD Board, his judgement will be questioned. Therefore, we ask Mr. Weil to remove himself from the “MOFD Equation” and let the Board move forward.
