Dual-Mode Backup Lighting for Enhanced Motor Vehicle Safety

DO YOU GET TENSED UP when backing your car up in a crowded parking lot? – Who doesn’t? The National Safety Council reported 2,057 work-related deaths on company parking lots between 1993 and 2003. (Note that this is only “work-related” deaths). Regrettably, people are losing lives, limbs and fenders in parking lots simply because the NHTSA’s rules regarding vehicle backup lighting are 100 years old; not at all suitable for today’s over-crowded and tightly laid-out parking lots.

If the NHTSA’s rules were updated to allow drivers the option to readily switch-select between ‘continuously-on’ backup lights, as we currently have (Mode 1), or flashing backup lights to alert all traffic (pedestrian and vehicular) behind cars which are backing up (Mode 2), the improved alertness level would prevent many accidents, particularly in parking lots. The patent pending mentioned above describes how to readily implement this ‘Dual-Mode Backup Lighting’ by simply using the type of flashers we currently use for turn-indicators, at a very low cost!

This petition will help convince the NHTSA that it's time for them to update their antiquated backup lighting rules. So, please, don't wait for your own parking lot accident to happen.
