Save Silver Lake in Brighton, Utah

  • by: Greg Ward

The petitioners respectifully requests that Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County County, the State of Utah along with the Federal Government as responsible parties and as stakeholders help to restore and preserve the Historical Silver Lake Area in Brighton, Utah.  Silver Lake is a National Recreational Area in our "back yard" and as such government needs to address its overwhelming deterioration over the last 5-10 years.  Government agencies responsible for protecting its value as a natural resource have allowed the lake to deteriorate; have failed to address the lake's health; and now should support actions to restore the lake's health and the needs of ever growing demand for its public use. It is important Silver Lake be restored to the beautiful vibrant alpine lake it once was over the last 150 years; to return the lake and area streams to be a natural fishery; to restore in part the lakes's alpine meadow for recreational use; and to encourage a ecosystem balancing increasing public use with wildlife habitat. The Silver Lake Area is unque being less than 25 minutes from Salt Lake City.  Many of the restrictions imposed by the city and county may appear to be outdated, inconsisted and unreasonable with modern technology. The Silver Lake area requires additional public adminities for its heavy summer use. The inherent issues to restore the lake's natural beauty and the growing demands for summer day use needs be addressed.  If the Silver Lake is going to be protected for future generations government needs to address the lake's restoration and the future demands upon the lake. The undersigned petitioner representing the local community and interested individuals would like Silver Lake to be restored; and the Silver Lake Area ecosystem better balanced with the demands for public use and wildlife habitit. These issues need to be addressed by local, state and federal government agencies holding regulatory policies over the Silver Lake Area. Government support is required to restore the Silver Lake Area and to implement plans for its future use.
