Sexual predation, drug traffic, rioting, and loss of human rights have plagued for-profit private prisons in the United States. Now, the corporate prison industry is trying to come to Canada.
Private prisons are jockeying for a piece of the action in Canada because of the bad press and lawsuits that have been their lot in the US. But many of the bad press and lawsuits appear to be well deserved. One private company, for example, stands accused of tolerating guards that sexually preyed on inmates ages 13-22 and of depriving inmates of educational opportunities and even health care!
Tell Canada not to walk in the shoes of the United States' deplorable record for prison conditions. Tell law makers to leave prison management in the public sector!
We the undersigned urge you to not to privatize your prisons. The United States' experience with for-profit, corporate prisons clearly cautions against such a move.
US private prisons have been characterized by human rights violations such as withholding of health care and education. Even worse, guards in these prisons have sexually abused inmates, some of them only children! Illegal drugs and riots also thrive in private prisons.
You should learn from the terrible mistakes of your neighbor to the south. Don't take prisons out of the public sector!
