Mandatory Minimum Drug Sentences were created for a time long ago to control the clear drug problem running across our country. These laws at the time were an excellent method to cut down drug usage and deals, but that was then and this is now. These sentences can be just as good as they once were, but they need improvement! While many people are pushing for them to be completely eradicated, it is quite clear that we need structure to control the drug problems this country endures. There are two main things that must be done. First, the sentences need to be made less harsh, as they are crowding our prisons and putting us into greater debt. However, these criminals should not just be released onto the streets. There must be some sort of rehabilitation program in place of the prison system to reduce sentences and prison populations. We must work together to push for these changes; if we don't, these laws may be removed and the streets could return to what they once were.
