Reading is an important skill for any child to learn to do well, and it provides the child with the confidence and ability to self-learn additional things.  But, reading together can also be a great time for creating lifelong bonds and memories, instilling the love of reading in a child, awakening a child's imagination, creating a desire for learning, and building confidence in his or her reading skills.  While ideally this would be done with a parent, there is no reason it can't also be done with a grandparent, aunt, uncle, great-aunt, family friend, etc.
