While watching the pilot of the new HBO series "The Leftovers", I was shocked, angered and deeply saddened by the portrayal of abandoned dogs. In both the first and last minutes of the episode an armed citizen and later the Chief of Police in a populated town shoot at hungry strays which are supposedly, after only 3 years of abandonment, not stealing food from garbage cans of trying to cajole it from local humans but having reverted to untamed "pack " mentality are driving local wildlife down city streets and attacking them. Anyone who has tirelessly worked at getting shelter dogs that were on the streets adopted is now weeping. It is such an on going struggle to get these pets, who were often abandoned through no fault of their own back into loving, stable homes. This type of portrayal does more damage than can be imagined. All dog lovers in the world please e-mail, call or write HBO and protest this outrage. Ask all of your friends to do the same and vow to boycott any program that continues to espouse this sort of message. Man's Best Friend deserves better treatment.
