MPs Don't Deserve a 10,000-Pound Pay Rise Right Now

British Members of Parliament may get a 10,000-pound a year pay rise. And there’s nothing the government can do to stop it.

MP salaries are decided by an independent authority, but ministers, whose pay is controlled by the government, have taken a five percent cut from what their predecessors were getting. Ministers’ pay is also reduced by the one percent rise that MPs are already getting.

Although MPs argue they aren’t paid enough to do what they do, fact is most people aren’t earning enough since the global recession hit, and most aren’t making nearly what MPs make.

It’s not that MPs wouldn’t deserve more pay under normal circumstances, but not in these times of austerity - especially not when Chancellor Osborne expects everyone else to tighten their belts in order to cut Britain's debts.

Tell the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority not to rise MP pay now.

We, the undersigned, say Members of Parliament should have to wait on such a large pay rise.

A poll taken by The Telegraph is overwhelmingly against the rise as not appropriate in these times of austerity. Even though the recession is beginning to lift, Chancellor George Osborne has asked British citizens to endure even more years of sacrifice in order to decrease the debt.

With everyone else in the country making sacrifices and ministers taking pay cuts while Members of Parliament continue to receive a small increase, it’s unfair for them to expect more until the economy improves enough for all to enjoy increases.

We hope the Prime Minister will at least speak out against this 10,000-pound rise, and we ask the Independent Parliamentary Standard Authority to hold off on the rise until the economy improves.

Thanks for your time
