Keep the archives at DC Booth Fish Hatchery!!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to move the archives from the D C Booth Fish Hatchery to West Virginia. If they remove the archives it makes it easier for them (the service) to be able to shut down the facility very quickly and efficiently in a short timeframe. The USFWS Mountain-Prairie Region said that the federal conservation organization is strongly considering relocating D.C. Booth’s archives in order to transfer money to higher priority facilities in need while keeping the hatchery open in a way that visitors wouldn’t necessarily notice any changes.

The Hatchery was on the chopping block last year as the US Fish and WIldhlife Service was trying to cut costs. There are many reasons to keep the Hatchery open and running.

* It has been running since 1896.

* Removal of the archives will cost the federal government probably more than if they are left at the Hatchery since the Hatchery currently holds 175,000 artifacts but the respository where they want to move it only holds about 25,000 artifacts, meaning that they would have to most likely construct a building and hire more staff. These same costs would keep the D C Booth Fish Hatchery open for a number of years if everything is just left in place.

* The D.C. Booth hatchery through the game fish and parks,  produces rainbow trout for stocking in state and tribal bodies of water.

* It is visited by nearly 150,000 people every year, helping the local economy.

Dear Mr President, Mr Vice President, Representatives, Senators, and all who are important to this message:

This petition needs your attention. We, the signers, believe that the archives from the DC Booth Fish Hatchery in Spearfish, South Dakota stay where they are. They provide an important economic backing to our fair city, and are appreciated here in our area. People from all over the world come to see the Historic Fish Hatchery. Please consider the economic impact that we will experience if they are moved. The following reasons will give you a snapshot of why we signed this petition.
