LA County, Crack Down on Inhumane Makeshift Stables

Three horses and a goat died in a fire that broke out in what looks like a string of makeshift stables. The location, an unincorporated industrial area of the Willowbrook section of South Los Angeles, seems as inappropriate as the structures themselves.

Luckily, the fire department was able to arrive within minutes after the fire broke out and extinguish it quickly, sparing a number of other animals.

But the entire place, a several-blocks-long string of plywood-boarded structures, seems no more than another fire just waiting to happen and certainly can't be operating legally. News sources say the fire is being investigated, but they don’t know who the owners are. KTLA was told the animals are owned by individuals who rent space at the location.

Horses deserve to be well-cared for in safe stables, and authorities should properly regulate such establishments.

Tell LA County Dept of Animal Care and Control to shut down or more strictly regulate these makeshift stables.

We, the undersigned, believe it is clear these stables in Willowbrook do not meet safety standards.

Horses deserve to be well-cared for in safe stables, and authorities should properly regulate such establishments.

We ask for a full investigation of this incident and that any sub-standard or illegal horse shelters either brought up to standard or shut down. Hopefully the county will find or provide alternative and appropriate stables owners can afford.
