The  taxpayers, the citizens and visitors to the Lake Tahoe region, do hereby demand the immediate cessation of beaver and other wildlife killings throughout the Tahoe basin and an immediate and thorough review of Placer County's wildlife policies and practices especially.

The  taxpayers, the citizens and visitors to the Lake Tahoe region, do hereby demand the immediate cessation of beaver and other wildlife killings throughout the Tahoe basin and a immediate and thorough review of Placer County's wildlife policies and practices especially.

Placer County and the Lake Tahoe area's cruel and archaic wildlife policies are well known to other mountain communities and municipalities as officials continually demonstrate callous behaviors regarding these matters.

Far from showing the Lake Tahoe region to be a progressive, world-class mountain destination, Placer County's archaic and inhumane wildlife killing policies especially, implemented without the knowledge or consent of the area's residents, show a "Wild West" mentality that is totally out of keeping with the attitudes of those who live in the area. We the citizens endeavor to live harmoniously with wildlife, as well as to attract tourism dollars into our sluggish economies; therefore, we respectfully remind you that both visitors and locals delight in viewing wildlife - one of the many things that make the Lake Tahoe region special. We also respectfully point out that this is the 21st century, and while communities all over the world have learned to live harmoniously with wildlife, these practices have not made their way here and to Placer County especially due to a culture of reckless and callous disregard for both wildlife and the wishes of the region's residents.

In this petition, the Signers expressly request the following, beginning immediately:

  • A moratorium on all wildlife killings in the Tahoe basin;
  • That rhetoric on whether or not any species is native to the Northern Sierra not be utilized as a justification for their killing;
  • That County employees, and especially Placer County employees, work with local wildlife organizations to employ non-lethal wildlife control methods for all species, and with specific regard to beavers:
    • The installation of water-control devices such as pipe and fence-based structures that allow for dam water flow-through in all affected areas; and
    • That County employees, and especially Placer County employees, work together with local and national wildlife groups to address wildlife issues with the California Department of Fish and Game, CalTrans and all other public agencies to carry out non-lethal removal and relocation of beavers if the above cannot be employed;
    • That if the above does not occur, that the responsible decision-makers be removed from their positions and be replaced with competent and thoughtful appointees who understand the concept of communities living in harmony with wildlife, thus bringing the County's wildlife management practices into the 21st century and supporting the desires of its taxpayers.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
