Stop Congress from passing The Mental Health Access and Gun Violence Prevention Act!

H.R. 1982 or The Mental Health Access and Gun Violence Prevention Act is a federally proposed Bill proposed to the House of Representatives on April 6, 2017, to put strict laws on allowing those with a Mental Health diagnosis to purchase firearms. Preparers of this bill plan to have a background check system in place to screen individuals seeking to purchase firearm. If an individual comes back having a Mental Health diagnosis, that individual will be denied the sale and referred to appropriate gun violence prevention services. According to the prepares of this bill, Suicide and the recent acts of gun violence throughout our country has been a direct result of individuals struggling with Mental Health Diagnosis. To pass this law would not only be placing a direct stipulation and target on an already vulnerable population, but it would be a violation of our rights as humans; the First Amendment states we have the right to bear arms. This law would also be a violation of privacy and HIPAA laws seeing as a Mental Health diagnosis is in fact protected health information. According to the NASW Code of Ethic 1.05, Cultural Awareness and Social Diversity, This law fails to understand the differences among the Mental Health Population and is targeting a specific population that have not been totally at fault for many of the recent acts of gun violence throughout the country. This law takes suicide and the acts of the Mental Health population with this topic and aims to exploit them because of this. The Mental Health population should not take total blame for gun violence. Gun violence prevention is something that needs to be addressed THROUGHOUT the country. Starting with youth, this is where the issue stems from. Prevention and support programs should be federally funded for EVERYONE to attend and there needs to be a psychological screening for individuals looking to purchase firearms. The most recent acts of gun violence throughout America have not been a result of an individual with a Mental Health diagnosis, why should this population have to take the blame.
