End the Use of Plastic Bags, Now!
As lightweight as the bags are, plastic is a major problem.
It’s estimated that 12 million barrels of oil are used to manufacture 30 million plastic bags and Germans use 71 plastic bags per person per year. That leads to carbon dioxide build-up in our atmosphere.
Plastic bags are made of non renewable sources like petroleum, and thus are not compatible with nature. A plastic bag can take from 15 to 1,000 years to break down, that is if they do not fly away with the wind because of them being light-weight. They often either end up in our landfills or in our oceans causing an ecosystem disruption.
It’s estimated that 100,000 marine animals die each year from suffocating or ingesting bags. One of the main toxins is dioxin, an endocrine disruptor which is a major pollutant.
During the production of 1kg of plastic, 6 kg of carbon dioxide is released and if we further narrow this down, we can say 5 plastic bags = 1kg of CO2. Around 40% of the produced plastic is disposed in 1 year! All bags disposed of or thrown in the trash end up in landfills, producing methane and slowly warming the Earth's temperature.
These bags do not remain usable after a very short period of time or they just fly out from your window with the wind. Along with only short term useage, there is endless amount of harm caused by plastic bags.
This is why people started considering other sustainable alternative options. Using reusable bags made of environment friendly materials are helpful as they are a sustainable option.
They are made of fabrics such as canvas and natural fibers like jute, and are more durable than plastic bags.
They can be used as multipurpose items because of their durability as well, like they can be used to carry groceries, as well as clothes and many other things.
Solutions are provided to us and we can take a step now and start improving and avoiding the damage already caused by this pollutant. We all want it to snow in winters and see flowers bloom in breezy spring but if we do not take immediate action, there will be hot summer weather continuing all year long! We can do it for all of nature and life, along with ourselves.
